For many women experiencing homelessness and seeking community, Skid Row can be a particularly hostile environment, and Downtown Women’s Center is the only provider organization focused on serving women in Skid Row. Every other Wednesday, Street Symphony musicians and Downtown Women’s Center residents share meditative musical offerings to convene vulnerable spaces of community and conversation. Although these events have been held online due to Covid-19 restrictions, Street Symphony is excited to be transitioning to in-person programming in 2021 as well as launching a new program in partnership with Visionary Women, a non-profit that funds high impact initiatives for women. This workshop, titled Women’s Voices, is a nine week residency that will be a co-collaborative space for DWC residents, staff, and Street Symphony teaching artists. Street Symphony teaching artists will lead participants in lyric and melody writing to create an original song by the residents of DWC. They will then rehearse as an ensemble and conclude the program by performing the song in concert featuring an all-female musical ensemble.
Downtown Women’s Center: Also known as DWC was founded in 1978, is the only organization in Los Angeles focused exclusively on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless women. For more information visit Downtown Women’s Center.
